"Bring It On" race series

Team Cycle Logic will be putting on the "Bring It On" race series this year. Previously run by Dan Larson, former Team Florida cycling coach, the "Bring It On" race series has a long tradition of kicking off the road racing season in North Florida.

The dates of this year's series will be JANUARY 19th • JANUARY 26th • FEBRUARY 2nd

Please see the Race Flyer for more information. We look forward to kicking off the 2008 season with you.

Offseason, What Offseason???

Cycle Logic is still finding their way to the podium, even in November. Rob Robins was flashing the orange and gray at a cyclocross race in south Florida. Not only is Rob a strong rider, but a modest one as well as he quietly downplays his cyclocross success.

We're more than happy to have Rob riding with us for the upcoming road season and representing Team Cycle Logic in winning fashion. Congrats Rob!

CL Goes Out With A Bang (and a couple crashes)

Well, we’ve got some good news and some not so good news from this past weekend.

The not so good news first:

It sounded as if Doug and Scott got their signals crossed while warming up on Saturday for the Pinellas Park Circuit Race, and Scott’s derailleur ended up being damaged beyond repair.  ‘Ripped off’ is what I heard.  So, from what I could gather, Scott raced on Doug’s bike.  Unfortunately, Scott was ‘taken down’ again during the race, taking him out of the race, and damaging the front spokes on Doug’s bike.

Doug also ended up racing, but flatted on the third lap.

Justin was also taken down on Saturday during his race.  NO, not by Doug!!! J

Justin still got 5th, though!!  I don’t know the whole story, so Scott will have to fill in the details.

I guess as they say, “like father, like son”?

With all of that bad luck, you guys should be good for the rest of the year!

Now, the good news!

First, the results from Saturday:

Despite going down, Justin got 5th in his 10-12 race to finish out the season on a great note.

Justin was honored during the finale banquet Saturday night with trophies for 3rd place in the Florida Cup Series, as well as 3rd place in the Florida Points Series!!

A BIG ORANGE AND GREY CONGRATULATIONS TO JUSTIN ON A GREAT YEAR!!

You’re going to spank them next year, for sure.

Now Sunday’s race (results not posted officially yet):

I’ve only heard that Justin took 2nd in his race, but I’ve received very little in detail regarding his podium finish.  Congratulations once more to our star player!!

Scott and Doug did not race Sunday.

Ron, James, and Roger showed up for the Cat 4 road race on Sunday.  The course was approx. 1 mile longer than the day before, and scheduled as an 8 lap, 24 mile race with CRAZY windy conditions.  Josh Servi (Team 19) went off the front from the get go, and Roger followed soon after.  James was right behind Roger when he jumped, and thought it best to hold back to see if anyone would chase.  Nobody went, so Ron and James positioned themselves on the front to keep the pace at a reasonable speed, and soon found themselves with a virtual third teammate in Kevin Jordan (the lone Team 19 rider in the pack).  The three kept most of the pack at bay, letting a few single riders slip through their fingers.  Unfortunately, the approx. 6 man breakaway caught Roger and Josh, and it came down to a sprint finish, with Roger finishing 3rd.  Ron and James stuck it out and tried their luck in the field sprint with the remaining riders.  From what I could see, James got 2nd in the field sprint, with Ron 2 places back.

Congratulations Roger, Ron, and James.

It felt great to race as a team, and to race FOR a team.

Thank you Roger for your donation to the Cycle Logic account.

As a side note, Cycle Logic ended the year in 15th place in the Category 4 Florida Points Series Team Standings (just behind Cycle Science, and just ahead of Team Florida).  Not too shabby for a first year team.

I’ve got to congratulate and thank everyone for their help in making this happen, from designing the kits and sponsorship materials to pursuing sponsorships, donations from our own teammates, participation at races and other events, team camaraderie, team support, and feed zone help (from teammates, friends, and family).  I can’t express how happy and grateful I am that the year was a great success for all of us.

Ron Palsgrove - Showing off the Orange and Grey in New Hampshire!!

Congratulations go out to Ron Palsgrove who, even while on vacation in lovely New Hampshire, chose to do a couple of races.
First things first:  Prior to Ron departing on his 2 week vacation to New England, Mr. Palsgrove took the liberty to upgrade to a CAT 4!!  It sounds as if Ron is back in the groove of things, his fitness has returned, and he is looking forward to attacking the hills and rivals at the Ocala Race Weekend with the rest of the Cat. 4 riders.
Now for his latest results as a newly christened Cat 4 rider:
Ron got 3rd at the New Hampshire International Speedway race held this past Thursday night (9/6/07), and finished with the pack on Saturday over a course described as 'rolling hills'.  Of course, much to his surprise, the hills 'roll' a lot bigger than they do down here in the flat lands.
Congratulations on both counts Ron, and we look forward to riding and racing with you when you return.

Great Results in Palatka!!

Saturday’s Crit Results:

Junior 10-12 - Justin Pfaff – 4th Place

Cat 4 – Roger Montes – 10th Place

Masters 35+ - Scott Pfaff – 12th Place

Sunday’s RR Results:

Junior 10-12 - Justin Pfaff – 2nd Place

Cat 4 – Roger Montes – 2nd Place

Cat 4 – Steve DeRoche – 5th Place

Cat 5 – Ron Palsgrove – 8th Place from what we could see (No results listed with FL Cycling.com)

Masters 35+ - Scott Pfaff – 14th Place

Sunday’s road race began with a little confusion and disorganization, but trudged on nonetheless.  As we arrived and realized the races were running approximately an hour and a half behind, we also heard stories of the local residents dropping tacks, dirt and rocks in some of the corners.  As the day went on, the help by the local authorities (and plenty of them were there to assist with the event) helped quell the redneck rampage.

We watched the Cat 5’s go off with our single rider Ron Palsgrove tucked neatly in the pack.  His break off of the bike must have done some good with his tactical decision making because he seemed to be racing in a much better position, staying protected in the field as much as possible.  AND WHAT DO YOU KNOW?  Saving all of that energy paid off in the end.  Ron finished with the pack, and got 8th place overall.

CONGRATULATIONS RON.  We look forward to racing with you in the 4’s next year!!

With the combining of the Cat 4’s and 3’s, the 6 Cycle Logic racers in this race had a feeling it was going to be a tough one.  The rolling hills throughout the course didn’t seem like much, but we knew with the addition of speed from the Category 3 riders, they would become much more of a challenge.  To our surprise (and luck), the 3’s really didn’t make much of a show.  As a matter of fact, more than half of the top 10 spots were taken by Cat 4 riders.  Michael Niemi of course made it into the lasting break, and eventually won the 3’s race, but with only one cat 4 rider in the break, it was a hectic race for 2nd place.  Cycle Logic’s 6 starters included James Penrod, Roger Montes, Steve DeRoche, Regan Woodall (in his first cat 4 event), and new member Ken Sallot.

After the fast and furious first lap, we all thought for sure the 3’s would split the pack, but it never happened.  After that 25 mph average lap, the pace slowed a bit (or we just got used to it).  The average speed of the entire race was 24.2, so it couldn’t have slowed much.  Veronica popped after a lap and a half, but she got in the trenches and battled it out with the rest of us for as long as she could.  That left five of us in the race, and everyone looked pretty good, although VERY HOT with 2 laps to go.  Roger came up with a plan to get us on the front and ‘drop the hammer’ through the last corner of the last lap, and we passed the word around to the remaining Cycle Logic teammates.  Unfortunately Regan got blocked in coming into that corner, but Ken led us out on the first pull to the corner, and James, starting from about 10th position, seeing that Roger was right behind him, laid into it and passed the entire pack (to their obvious surprise).  This caused the entire field to spread out into a single high speed train, and deter any sort of organization on the front by any of the other teams.  As James popped at the bottom of the hill, the pack ate him up, and it was up to Roger and Steve to take it home on the final climb to the finish.  The final climb, although not deadly steep like sugarloaf, and not even as long became tougher as the heat, distance, and speed took effect on the field.

Roger and Steve dug deep up the hill, and passed too many riders to count, with Roger finishing 2nd and Steve finishing 5th!!

Of course, I think the toughest part of the whole race was the battle with the organizers and other riders to determine placings in the field.  Without a camera to record the finish, and without timing chips, it was left to word of mouth vs. the honor system vs. the ‘buddy’ system (“I was in front of you, and ‘my buddy’ and ‘my other buddy’ were in front of me”).

All in all, it was a great weekend for Cycle Logic

Congratulations to all that participated, and a big thank you to Doug for volunteering his services to keep the roads clear of riders, and a HUGE thank you to Vern, Ron, and Satan (did I forget somebody?) for feeding us all during the race.  I really don’t think we could have done it without you guys there to help.

See you at the next one!!

Cycle Logic Welcomes Two More

A warm Cycle Logic welcome to Rob Robins, and Doug Folkerth, our newest Cycle Logic teammates.

Rob lives in Gainesville, and has been racing Category 4 (and placing well, I might add) for a little while now.

From the e-mails I have received from Rob, and the impressions provided by the Gainesville riders, it sounds like Rob is excited about his move to Cycle Logic.

I don’t have much information on Doug at the moment, but my understanding is he is a strong recreational rider, and is looking forward to participating in future Cycle Logic events.

It sounds like both Rob and Doug are looking forward to showing off the Orange Grey later this year, and into the 2008 season.

We all look forward to meeting you guys, and riding and racing with you in the near future.

Welcome!!

Cycle Logic Dominates Lake Louisa Series!!

Cycle Logic showed up IN FORCE last night with 6 riders at the last of the Lake Louisa circuit series hosted by Team 19’s Adam Baskin.

First, I’d like to say thank you to Adam and everyone that helped put on the series. It is definitely a breath of fresh air to be racing in a smaller series with smaller groups. The smaller races take a little more tactical decision making, and with all of us being able to race together, I think it helps with the team dynamics, and gives everyone the chance to see what it’s like to race as a group.

Now, on to the race. James Penrod and Steve DeRoche came to defend their tie for 1st place in the series, knowing that they really only had to get minimal points to keep their lead, but more importantly, keep points from the 2nd placed riders that were nipping their heals in the overall rankings. Showing up to assist in this effort were Veronica Geist, Ron Palsgrove, Ed Sabol, and Josh Pittman. Everyone came with their own level of expectations, limitations, and abilities, and I think everyone used what they had very wisely.

Ron, knowing he probably wouldn’t be able to stay in the race the whole time, jetted off the front early in the race on the first hill, picking up the pace a bit to thin the pack. Later in the race, he provided some more accelerations until the effort really took a toll on him, and he popped. Even off the back, he provided updates to the CL riders still in the pack as we passed on each lap, giving us key information as to the status of the breakaway.

Ed, who admittedly had no clue what to do did a wonderful job doing whatever needed to be done from sheltering James in the head wind, to showing off his time trialing skills to assist in catching the breakaway.
Veronica, Josh, James, and Steve all worked hard to assist Steve in his positioning, as well as aiding in capturing the breakaway.

From the beginning of the race, we all had an idea of what was to come. The Team19 guys were talking about Cycle Logic even as we lined up at the start. We heard murmurs that we were “the pace setters”, and we were “the ones to watch”. Even during the race, they were literally counting us to see how many Cyle-Logicians were left.

On the first hill, in the first half lap, Veronica provided her best acceleration to make sure everyone was taking her seriously, and to prevent anyone from breaking away.  Half of a lap later Soon after the start, Ed broke off the front, and being a time trialist, we thought he would stay out there. It soon became evident that everyone else in the pack may not have been riding for Team19 (although some 19’s were obviously riding incognito), they were definitely not going to help us out. Several riders bridged up to Ed, and as they dropped off one by one, the single Team19 rider staid out there. After a lap of Cycle Logic cutting the gap, only to have everyone else hold back, Ed noted the rider off the front was an excellent time trialist as well. Trying to relay this to the remaining Orange and Grey still in the pack, we all knew that in order to catch anyone, we were going to have to do all of the work ourselves.

We sporadically came to the front, after recovering from our previous efforts, and worked our quads off to decrease the lead of the one man breakaway, and with half a lap to go, we caught him and the group became one, albeit a much smaller one. Soon after the catch other riders, sensing some weakness in the ranks of Cycle Logic, picked up the pace once again on the climb to the finish. Josh Veronica and James came to the front to assist in Steve’s eventual sprint to the finish, and soon had to leave it up to him to complete the last Ï€ mile by himself. Steve ended up with 3rd place with a decimated, but very satisfied Team Cycle Logic left in his wake.
After discussing our efforts and achievements over pizza after the race, it was evident that we all had a blast, and were all very satisfied with our efforts, and especially the results of our efforts. We all got a laugh at everyone talking about how we were the ‘strong’ team to watch, when we really just came out to have fun, and enjoy racing with each other. It is very satisfying to know the principles of having fun that we set for the team early on are still alive and kicking.
Final results for the series:
1st Steve Deroche – Cycle Logic
2nd James Penrod – Cycle Logic
9th Josh Pittman – Cycle Logic
Congratulations!! and congratulations and thank you to all that helped achieve this. We really couldn’t have done it without you.

Cycle Logic Puts the 1-2 Punch to Lake Louisa Series

“It was like racing in the Tour”

“The team work was amazing”

“The team tactics couldn’t have been any better”

…all quotes from the Cycle Logic teammates represented at the Lake Louisa Series #4 this past Tuesday night.

Cycle Logic showed up once again with James Penrod, defending his lead, Steve DeRoche, fighting to break the tie for second, and helping with their efforts were Joshua Pittman and Veronica Geist.

From the first lap, Cycle Logic showed they meant business.  Josh threw down the gauntlet attacking at the last climb of the first lap, forcing Team 19 to react.  Sitting calmly in the pack was James, Steve, and Vern, allowing everyone else to bring back the break.  Once the group was back together, other attacks were made, and pulled back.  It was pretty evident the group was not going to allow a break to succeed.  That meant the pack was going to chase anyone that went off the front.  Josh surged again, forcing a reaction, and hopefully wearing them down, and thinning the pack.  DeRoche surged on the downhill section with 3 laps to go, breaking up the field briefly, but forcing some pressure on all of the riders.  On the next lap Veronica attacked, and much to her surprised was taken very seriously.  One lap later, on the first climb of four heading toward the finish, Veronica sat on the front again, whipping up the pace to keep everyone in check, and not allowing anyone to break off the front.  Steve DeRoche, seeing his opportunity ran away up the hill with virtually no reaction from the pack.  Soon after with two short climbs to go, James Penrod broke off from the front of the pack, hoping to sustain the effort to the end.

In the end, Steve DeRoche got 1st place with plenty of room to spare.

Although aiming for the wrong finish point, James Penrod still crossed in 2nd with another rider nipping closely at his heals.

Veronica and Josh staid in the pack to the end.

I can’t say enough about the efforts Josh, Veronica, and Steve put out to defend my lead.

I appreciate all of their help, and hope to have just as successful a race for the finale.

Penrod Leads series

Our very own James Penrod is the current leader of the Lake Louisa Summer Training Series. James placed 2nd and 3rd respectively in the first two editions of the series amassing 9 points and securing the top spot overall. James' lead held through the third race of the series even though he was unable to attend.

With James' recent absense, the leaderboard has gotten tight. There is currently a 4-way tie for 2nd place just two points behind James. Another Cycle Logic teammate, Steve DeRoche is amongst those sitting at the second place position due to his sprint victory at the 2nd installment of the race series.

With only two more races remaining in the Lake Louisa Summer Training Series (July 24th & August 7th), we need to do our best to ensure that one of these guys finishes as the overall winner of the series. We should all make a solid effort to head out to Lake Louisa for these last two races and either take points away from the other cyclists in the field, or help James and Steve add to their point total.

Get the printable race flyer here.

They're Here!

After a few delays from the factory, the Team Cycle Logic cycling caps have finally arrived! Those of you who ordered caps can pick them up from Paul at the crit in Deland on sunday. If you would like to receive your caps sooner than that, he'll have them at his house in Gainesville. For those of you who will not be in attendance at this weekends race, Paul will send any caps belonging to Ocala/Leesburg teammates home with a representative from that area (i.e. DeRoche).

Moose has already picked his caps up and will be proudly displaying them on the roads of California this week while on vacation.

Rodrigo, we'll ship your caps to your address in Pennsylvania...you should receive them before the arrival of your son at the end of this month (if caps aren't received by end of month...just wait longer)

Those of you who ordered caps, and haven't paid James for them yet, shame on you. Be sure to give your $8/cap to James asap.

Those of you who completely dropped the ball and didn't get in on this great opportunity, there are a few extras that can be purchased from the team, contact James Penrod for more information.

Thanks for your patience and enjoy the caps.

Cycle Logic Take 1st, 3rd, 4th at Lake Louisa

Competing in the very wet B’s race at Lake Louisa on Tuesday, June 19 were Steve DeRoche, James Penrod, Josh Pittman, and Veronica Geist.

Cycle Logic made a good effort to diminish the spirits and legs of the other competitors on this hilly course, while immediately answering any accelerations and breaks. Although a few riders were dropped in the process, many stayed integrated in the pack and tried their best to do battle with the Orange and Grey at the end. In the uphill sprint, Steve DeRoche walked away with his 1st place finish, James battled for second, but ended up with 3rd, and Josh (although initiating the final jump to the line) came in with a 4th place finish. Veronica was happy to finish nipping at the heals of her teammates with the rest of the field.

Congratulations to all, you all worked well.

FL. State TT Championships

The Florida State Time Trial Championships were held this past weekend just east of Lake City. The course was flat, fast, with very little wind, and almost completely traffic-free.

Cycle Logic Teammate Veronica Geist came out of the woodwork to show off her time trialing skills. With a time of 1:07:08 for the 40K course, she came in with a 4th place finish in the Women’s Category 4 field. WELCOME BACK BABY!!

James Penrod also raced, and when asked how he fared, he was quoted as saying “I didn’t get last place”. Further research through Floridacycling.com confirmed this to be a true statement.

Congratulations to Vern and James!!

FLORIDA STATE ROAD RACE CHAMPIONSHIPS

What a tough race!

This year, the Florida State Road Race Championships were held at a new venue in Ocala, Florida. Although a departure from the Tallahassee location of past, the rolling hills took it’s toll on many of the riders. Probably the most menacing challenge of the weekend was the 100 degree heat, which took it’s toll on everybody, spectators and riders alike.

I would like to thank everyone that showed for their support, as well as many of the Cycle Logic teammates that volunteered their time, cars, and significant others to the cause. I can’t say enough about volunteering for these events because if there are no volunteers, the quality, quantity, and safety of the races will diminish.

This year, the races were spread over two days. Saturday hosted the age-group riders, and Sunday’s event included the category riders. Our up and coming super star Justin Pfaff performed superbly on the hilly, overheated course on Saturday to gain a 3rd place finish in the Junior 10-12 race. If you didn’t get a chance to ride this course, trust me it was no joke. We’re all really proud of you Justin.

Sunday, Cycle Logic had riders in the Women’s 1-2-3, Men Category 4, and Men Category 5 races.

Rachel Hallum gave it all she had in the Women’s race to finish 12th in a much smaller field than us men are used to competing in. If you’re unfamiliar with racing in a pack, it is a much harder race when there are only 10-15 people racing than with a pack of 50-75 people. Drafting becomes an issue, especially when riders start dropping off. Congratulations Rachel.

The Men’s Category 4 race included Paul Messal, James Penrod, Scott Pfaff, Roger Montes, and Steve DeRoche. With the race starting at 1:00 in the afternoon, and the temperature rising near 100 degrees, we all knew hydration was going to be an issue. Thankfully, we had some great support with Joshua Pittman managing the support in the Cycle Logic feed zone. With the combination of the hills, the heat, and the squirrely riders in the pack, we lost a few riders half way through the race, but James and Steve stuck in the pack to see how they would fare at the end of the race. Unfortunate results were had by both unfortunately: James took an unsuccessful flyer off the front on the last hill before the finish, opening a gap that just couldn’t be sustained on the 40+ mph approach to the finish line. Steve, in hopes of getting to show off his sprint, got bumped off the road at about 300 yards from the finish, and although an accomplished mountain biker, and excellent bike handler, he chose not to sprint for the finish in the grass, and through the spectators tents.

The Men’s Category 5 race included Anthony Hutton, and new Cycle Logic teammate Regan Woodall. For some reason, the hills didn’t seem to affect our two mountain biking cat5-ers, probably because their used to climbing.
Local Gainesville Cycling Club member, "Naked Ed", and new addition to Team Cycle Logic, Regan Woodall, warm up prior to the start of the Cat. 5 race.

Regan looked poised to stay off the front at the beginning of the race, with a gap opening after the first lap, but the pack closed the gap, and the group finished together. Unfortunate results again cursed the Cycle Logic riders. Apparently a rider that was not competing in the race somehow got caught up in the pack, forcing riders to scramble out of the way of the slower rider, resulting in a chain reaction that sent several riders rolling along the asphalt at 35+ mph. Thankfully, Anthony and Regan were not injured, but both suffered in their placings due to the wreck. Anthony still pulled out a 5th place finish, and Regan 10th. Good job guys.

We look forward to seeing everybody at the next race.

Keep the rubber side down.

Magnets & Banners & Magnets Oh my!

Team Cycle Logic is going to be well-represented at this weekends State Championship Road Race in Ocala. Not only will we have a full Catagory 4 team, but Team Cycle Logic members are pitching in to make sure that the race production goes off without a hitch.

There will be Cycle Logic team members marshalling corners of the course, driving wheel trucks and driving USCF officials around throughout the weekend. Due to our volunteering with the races, we will be able to display our team banner at the start/finish line. What team banner you ask? The team banner that our sponsor, Quality Banner, is printing for us. see above image

In addition to the beautiful banner flying the Orange and Gray at the S/F line...you'll also see the official cars and wheel trucks that are driven by us bearing our logo as well. James and Paul put together some Cycle Logic car magnets for use this weekend and should be a nice compliment to all the Cycle Logic marketing that will be going on.

If you are racing, watching or especially volunteering this weekend; be sure to wear your Cycle Logic team T-shirt or team jersey or your vest/jacket. The more exposure the better...this is, after all, a hometown race.

Out For A Ride

Over a year in the making, and three code frameworks later, Out For A Ride is finally ready for public consumption. Tell all your friends!

***Keep in mind that this is ALPHA, the designers/programmers haven't even made it to BETA yet, so there will be tons more features coming in the future.

This is a site that I've been helping to test over the past few months. Created by Stephen Hallgren aka "Teevio", a designer/cyclist from the Boston area. Out For A Ride is a great place to log your rides, your routes, what gear you ride with, what bikes you ride on as well as plenty of ability to chat, leave comments and basically socialize online with like-minded cyclists.

Still in it's infancy, Out For A Ride will only continue to grow. This is our opportunity to get in on the ground floor and be some of its early members. Out For A Ride was only made public today and already is attracting cyclists from all over the country.

Out For A Ride would be the perfect place for all of us to see what, where and how much we all are riding. For those of you who decide to check it out and see what Out For A Ride is, leave a comment here and let the rest of us know what your "Out For A Ride screen name" is. If you're curious, you can check out what I've ridden the past couple of weeks by looking up "PMESS". I've also uploaded our team kit image in my "Gear" section...check it out.

Hope to see you guys there!

How about that Helmet?

I recently came across this image of Floyd racing at the 2007 Teva Mountain Games and couldn't help but notice how nicely his Giro Atmos would compliment our own Cycle Logic kits.

I searched around and found that the kit Floyd is wearing in this picture belongs to Memphis Velo. I have made a couple of inquiries as to the origination of the above mentioned Atmos with the beautiful orange and gray color scheme and will fill ya'll in if anything comes from it.

In the meantime, if anybody knows how we can get our hands on those...let me know.

Team Potluck Banquet - Who's In?

The idea has been tossed around regarding a Team Potluck Dinner/ Banquet.

Josh Pittman has been so kind as to allow us to use his house, located centrally in Ocala, just off of the interstate which makes for easy access for all.

Activities at Hacienda de Pittman include foose-ball, pool, and ping-pong inside, and horseshoes outside. I hear Josh was blessed with a rather large deck as well, if anyone just wants to sit and chill with their favorite beverage.

Families and kids are welcome.

Anyway, I was thinking of getting everyone together one weekend in July, but I need dates when everyone is available or not available so we can have as many teammates and their families attending as possible.

Once we figure out the date, we’ll organize who is bringing what.

Please either respond in the comments section of the blog, or e-mail me at jamesnvern@embarqmail.com.

Scott's Tallahassee recap

I had a good weekend Justin had a great weekend.

We both did all three events Crit., TT and Road Race.

I was able to finish in the pack sprint in both the Criterium and the Road Race and hold my own in the Time Trial. There were a few guys in the Time Trial that I wasn’t even close to but I was within 15-20 seconds of most guys. The Road Race was pretty darn hard there were very few flat spots on the course and it seemed like there were attacks on all of the climbs. There were some sections that were slower so you at least had a chance to recover some before the next attack came. We only shelled a couple of guys out the back on the last lap so it stayed together most of the way. There were two guys who got away on the last lap, we held them for a little while but they had team mates with radios and as soon as you would try to bridge up they knew it and they put the hammer down to keep it away. It was a good race to see how much pain you could put up with, it’s the first time my quads started to cramp in the sprint, but then again I sprint like maple syrup coming out of a maple tree J The Criterium course was great it only had one turn and it was just before a little rise which was about 200 yards before the finish line. Four guys got away about midway through the race and they ended up staying away and taking the podium spots. We worked hard to bring them back but we just didn’t have the firepower to do it. With about 3 laps to go it became clear we weren’t getting any closer so everyone started jockeying for position to be ready for the sprint.

Scott's Results:
12th in the Crit.
10th in the TT
14th in the Road Race

Justin’s Results
1st in the Criterium
1st or 2nd Time Trial The times for this were all messed up and they didn’t have it fixed by the time we left.
1st Road Race
1st Omnium

Justin rode very strong in all of his events; he stayed with the 13/14 year old juniors in both the Criterium and the Road Race. He worked very hard in the Road Race to stay with them through all the hills he said that the attacks were very hard and he was just barely able to hang on with them. If you look at the picture of the Road Race finish check out how BIG some of these kids are. I was VERY proud of his racing this weekend. As a result of him winning a race I was forced to let him shave his legs. I thought for sure he would not be shaving his legs until next year. This was the very first thing he said after the Criterium, “Can I shave my legs tonight?”. I would suggest that anybody wanting to participate in a great event put this one on your calendar for next year.

Cycle Logic Takes 2nd at Lake Louisa

Cycle Logic’s James Penrod took 2nd place in the B’s race at the Lake Louisa Circuit Series opener Tuesday evening.

The course was a rolling series of hills, with an uphill climb to the finish, and head winds up the hill at what must have been 20+ mph. James battled it out in the three man break to nip Team 19 at the line in the final moments.

I’m hoping to see more Cycle Logic Riders at the next race to be held June 19. Races go off at 7:00, so be there early to register and warm up. Race flyer can be found here.

Cycle Logic Goes to The State Crit Championships

I have to first say thank you to Paul for informing us of the course layout. The hill was a wicked killa, just as he said.

The course was short, and smooth, with a nice incline to the finish line. That ‘nice’ incline, however turned ugly after a few bouts at over 20mph on the back of the pack. Josh and myself couldn’t take too much of that, but a few of our riders faired very well.

In the AM, Justin Pfaff took the bronze medal in the junior’s 10-12 race. His stellar performance may have been aided by his brand new Scott CR1 bike. *see more of Justin here, here and here.

In the early afternoon, Anthony Hutton positioned himself in the Category 5 race to battle against the hill and the other front runners in a dead sprint starting from the bottom, and extending all the way to the finish line to gain 5th place.

Our newest Category 4 rider, Mr. Steve DeRoche (NOT Deleroche), stayed in the pack to the end against the urging of his ailing body, and somehow pulled out a 5th place finish. With a single rider off the front of the main pack, and another single rider off the front chasing the leader, Steve battled it out to cross the line 3rd in the main pack.

Congratulations to all of our racers. You all deserve it.

Remember the State Road Race is coming up June 9 & 10, and Cycle Logic is paying the entries. Check Floridacycling.com for details.

Cycle Logic Gets 5th at Muddy Buddy Orlando!!

I just had to share this one.
Muddy Buddy is a 6 mile course completed by two person teams.  The teams begin the race together, one on a bike (Mt. Bike) and one running.  After each mile, the teammates switch off after completing the obstacle at that point.
The race is done just for fun, and it shows in the costumes worn by the contestants.

Representing Cycle Logic was our very own Veronica Geist and James Penrod who got 5th in their class of 74 teams.
(and all of those race numbers came in quite handy, as you can see)

NEWS FLASH: Win #2 for Cycle Logic!!!

One of our Category 5 riders, Steve DeRoche won the Ferndale Criterium this past weekend!!

With a couple breaks and bridges off the front of the pack, it was amazing that he had the energy to sprint it out in the end, but he broke away through the last corner, and won by several seconds.

Congratulations to Steve, and all of our riders that participated in this past weekend’s races.

Our two ‘Ants’ (Mussalo and Hutton) both braved the grueling Sugarloaf Road Race on Saturday.
Anthony Hutton finished in 14th, on the heals of the lead pack of Cat 5 under 35 riders..

Participants Sunday included Cat 5 racers Steve DeRoche, Anthony Hutton, and Michael ‘B-Mac’ Brown, as well as Cat 4 racers James Penrod and Josh Pittman.

On a side note, as many of you may or may not know, Ron ‘Baldy-Locks’ Palsgrove has been out of racing commission due to a strained back that has taken him off of his bike for the past 4 weeks. He has been mobile, but concentrating on recovery before getting back on his bike. He completed a 25 mile ride this weekend, and has vowed to try a 3 day per week regimen to gain his strength back.

I’m sure we are all anticipating a speedy return to racing for Ron.

LET'S GET RACING!!

OK,

First, just a little bit of an update on the happenings with Team Cycle Logic:

Cycle Logic’s Newest Fan

One and a half weeks ago, Team Cycle Logic and the Gator Nation welcomed the birth of it’s newest member and fan; Reese Addison Messal born in the early hours of April 13, 2007.  Congratulations to Paul and Jennifer.  The last I heard Mom, Dad, and Baby Messal were doing quite well, and Paul was pricing race wheels for the stroller.  I’m sure ‘someone’ will post pictures of the beautiful baby with her Cycle Logic onesey on very soon.

Jacksonville Race Weekend

We had a couple racers brave the wind and rainy conditions at the Jacksonville Race Weekend.

Justin Pfaff got 3rd in Saturday’s Crit, he is listed as 4th in Sunday’s Road Race (although I’ve heard he actually got 3rd) in the Junior 10-12 division.

Scott Pfaff competed both days as well, getting into the results with a 23rd in Sunday’s Road Race (right on the tails of some VERY strong riders, I might add).

Congratulations to both.  That wind was no joke!!

Alright, Who’s Ready To Race?

The next race on the schedule is the Sugarloaf Road Race which races up the front side of the infamous Sugarloaf Mountain Road.  With 900 feet of climbing per lap, and multiple climbs up the front side of Sugarloaf (the tough side), this is one buggar of a race.  If you think you’re a climber, THIS ONE IS FOR YOU!!

Sunday’s circuit race is right down the street, but is very flat (seriously), through winding tree lined roads in the lovely town of Ferndale.

This should be a great race weekend, and with the close proximity to Ocala and Leesburg, we should have a good showing for fans and racers alike.

Six Gap Century – September 30, 2007

Rodrigo, if you’re still reading the blog, we miss you.  I’ve heard rumor that Rodrigo is hoping to attend the Six Gap Century in September, located in the North Ga. mountains.  For everyone that missed the Tour de Georgia trip, this is in the same area, and the 100 mile ride incorporates 6 mountain climbs with a total altitude gain of approximately 10,000 feet!!  I know others are interested, and if we can get enough people, we should be able to get a great rate on a cabin or house.

Cycling Caps/ Re-sized Jerseys

Paul will have to update us on the caps, but I believe we still have a couple more weeks before those arrive.

I am expecting the re-sized jerseys to be on my doorstep this afternoon (April 24, 2007).  I will contact those that requested re-sizing when they arrive.

That’s all I got for now.

Keep the black side down.

GO CL!!

Team Kit Re-sizing Update

Many of you have asked “where in the world are our team kits that were sent out to be re-sized?”

Well, I have an answer for all of your inquiring minds…kind of.

I spoke to Cesar at Z Bikewear last night, and he informed me that a shipment is sitting in customs right now, but he has not received the documentation describing it’s contents. He feels confident that our gear is included, in which case we should have the re-sized kits by April 13.

I should be able to provide further information by Tuesday, April 10.

I appreciate everyone’s patience.

Go Orange and Gray!!

Team Cycling Caps Anyone???

It has been brought to my attention by more than a few members of the team that they would like to have a Cycle Logic cycling cap. I did some digging and found a place where we can get custom caps for the team. Here are the specifics:
• We'd need to order a minimum of 25 caps.
• The custom Cycle Logic caps would cost $8 per cap, or $200 total for a minimum order.

I took the liberty of designing a team cap for you to visualize.

Before I pursue this any further, those of you interested (team members, fans, sponsors, family members etc...) send an email to Paul Messal and let me know how many you want. If there is enough interest I'll move forward with sending in the artwork and gettin' us some caps! Payment would be due as soon as the order is sent in.

Bike Rodeo

Cycle Logic attended and assisted in the annual Eighth Street Elementary School Bicycle Rodeo March 19, 2007.

The annual bicycle rodeo is organized every year by the PTO members, and various local volunteers to teach the children basic bicycle safety. Statistics show that children ages 10-14 are most likely to be involved in bicycle accidents resulting in injury or death, so it is paramount that these children learn bicycle safety as early as possible.

Cycle-Logic members Josh Pittman and James Penrod (decked out in their best Orange and Grey) assisted the PTO volunteers with minor mechanical repairs, helmet adjustments, as well as demonstrating their bicycling skills through the agility course. Both Josh and James were received well by the children, who later asked “who where those guys, they were so cool!”.

The day of the Century

The 4th Annual Take Stock in Children ride took place last weekend on March 10th. Beautiful weather greeted us as we arrived in Ocala for what would turn out to be a great day of riding. About seventeen members of our Cycle Logic team showed up in support of this worthwhile cause that helps low-income children succeed by providing college scholarships, mentors, tutoring and long-term support.

At the start line, there was an obvious presence of orange and grey clad riders and with the roll out, Scott Pfaff and Roger Montes went to the front and kept things nice and steady amidst a sea of overly-anxious century "racers". Little Justin Pfaff tucked himself into the draft and hung in like a pro even as the speeds started to rise into the mid-20 mph-range.

The ride participants quickly sorted themselves into their corresponding ability groups and Cycle Logic was a hugely represented at the front of the field. It took a while for some of the participants riding with the lead group to get the hang of the basic group-ride dynamics, but Team Cycle Logic did more than their part to keep the quick pace rolling and rotating smoothly.

The Marion county sheriff deputies did an outstanding job leading the ride through the gorgeous countryside that is blanketed with horse farms and rolling fields. At each intersection a deputy with lights and sirens blazing stopped all traffic and yielded safe passage to those riding in this first-class event.

The lead group pedaled steadily into the well-stocked lunch stop located at Boulware Springs state park just off of the Gainesville-Hawthorne trail. An assortment of Powerbar products, energy drinks, gourmet sandwiches from Crispers, cookie platters and fruits were laid out for the cyclists and methodically laid into by them as well.

After resting and refueling, the leaders set back out to finish the century. The group consisting of approximately twenty riders would soon be whittled down to a core group of a dozen or so, half of which belonged to Cycle Logic. Scott, Ron, Moose, Mike, Paul and Steve D. would be the ones carrying the Cycle Logic torch to the finish line and really served as the backbone for the remaining group.

Moving along at a quick pace, the group worked well together with the lion's share of the pulling being done by none other than Scott "El Jefe" Pfaff. As the "25 miles-to go" rest stop approached, "El Jefe" informed the group members that we should quickly stop one last time to top off bottles. We pulled into the rest stop and four non-Cycle Logic riders pressed on in pursuit of glory. Despite my attempts to stall at the tables stocked with great food and cold drinks, the eight of us didn't waste too much time in getting back on the road now that we had a foursome about 4 minutes up the road to chase down!

With twenty-five miles to go, we dosed our efforts while rotating steadily. Once we were able to catch a glimpse of the four leaders up the road our mission intensified and our pace increased. With only eight miles to the finish and coming into less-rural areas of Ocala we utilized our police escorts to the fullest and screamed through corners and intersections as if we were the lead break in a European pro race.

The catch was inevitably made with only a few miles remaining just as the heat of the day took its toll on Steve, who succumbed to heavy cramping in his quadriceps. A rider from one of the Tampa teams smartly launched an attack realizing that the numbers weren't in his favor. This quickly dropped a couple of the guys that opted not to stop at the 25 to go mark. Cycle Logic took the responsibility of bringing back the attack. Once we were gruppo compacto, the pace slowed and Paul launched off the front in order to force a non-Cycle Logic rider to chase, which they did. With no real sprint point or finish line to speak of, the remaining eight riders (5 of those being from Cycle Logic) darted into the parking lot in a relatively anticlimactic manner.

When the dust settled, the lead group had a ride-time of 4 hours and 23 minutes with an average speed of about 22.6 mph. All of the Cycle Logic members did an outstanding job representing the team and completing an early season century [editors note: Justin Pfaff smoked the half-century with his mom and beat us all to the post-ride refreshments].

A huge thanks goes out to the organizers of the Take Stock in Children ride as this has been largely regarded as one of the most well run events attended by its riders.

Cycle Logic wrapped up the day with some great pasta and Greek food at Lakis in Ocala...lots of stories, lots of laughs and lots of fun was had by all that attended.

See you at the next event!

They've arrived...

Just in time for the warm Florida spring to deliver us 80+ degree weather, the mailman has delivered us our Cycle Logic vests and jackets! No need to fear, it will once again get cold, or at least cool, and those items will come in very handy. Cycle Logic vests and jackets are also great items for friends and family to wear during the races to show their support, or to stand out in the feed zone at road races.

If you've ordered a vest or a jacket, contact James to arrange delivery.

UF Race Weekend Results

I apologize about the length of time it’s taken to post the results from last weekend, but it’s been a crazy week.
Here’s the quick version (if that’s possible):

Team updates
We did the Team kit switcharoos as needed for proper sizing.
• If you haven’t checked the team and individual points series, you may be surprised to see Cycle Logic ranked:
- 10th Cat 4’s
- 4th Junior 10-12’s with Justin Pfaff ranked 4th individually.

Saturday’s Time Trial- held in the quaint city of Alachua, FL.
• Individual time trialists went off in the morning, and Cycle Logic was represented in 3 different categories.
- In the Cat5, 55+ we had John Duggan, who placed 3rd!!
- In the Masters 35+ Scott Pfaff placed 18th. That’s a tough slot with a bunch of 1, 2, and 3 riders.
- And last, but certainly not least, our star player Mr. Justin Pfaff placed 4th in the Juniors aged 10-12.
Congratulations to all of you. Individual time trialing is certainly not an easy discipline.

• Team time trials departed in the afternoon, with two Cycle Logic teams competing against each other in the Cat3, 4, 5 slot (a friendly, inter-team rivalry):
- The Cycle Logic Ocala team included Ed Sabol, Ron Palsgrove, James Penrod, and Veronica Geist.
- The Cycle Logic Gainesville team included Paul Messal, Roger Montes, Scott Pfaff, and Rodrigo Sagastegui.
- To the surprise of most, the Ocala team edged out the Gainesville contingent by 50 seconds.
Congratulations go out to both teams.

Sunday’s criterium - held in downtown Gainesville, FL.
The course included a pretty nasty brick/ cobbled section that initially seemed like it would take it’s toll on riders given the severity and quantity of the bumps, potholes, and protruding manholes, but fortunately Cycle Logic made it through the day safely.

Cycle Logic was represented well in several categories:
• Scott Pfaff finished in the main pack of the 35+ Men’s category, and appeared to position himself well throughout the race.

• I tell you, our young Justin Pfaff is making a name for himself in the Junior 10-12 group!! This guy is going to be in this age group for another two years, and it is evident that he is and will be the one to beat for this year, and years to come. Justin finished second in the 10-12 criterium on Saturday!!

• Cat. 4’s included Cycle Logic Teamates Roger Montes, Paul Messal, James Penrod, Josh Pittman, and a second race for Scott Pfaff who was the best placed finisher with 14th.

• Cat. 5’s included Ron Palsgrove, Anthony Hutton, and Micheal Brown. The race stretched the group out from the beginning, and stayed that way throughout the race ending with a pretty select group to battle it out at the line. Michael Brown finished the best out of our three riders at 5th, and Anthony and Ron finished 11th and 12th, respectively.

Congratulations to all riders for all events, and a big THANK YOU goes out to everyone that showed up to cheer us on. It really does make a huge difference to have a team of great friends backing us while we’re out there racing. Fun was had by all both Saturday and Sunday.

As a side note, team photos were taken Saturday. Hopefully those will be posted soon.

As for other photos taken by various sources, I’d like to set up a photo site so everyone can post photos as needed, and can be viewed/ printed/ saved by all.

***here on some shots gathered so far...there may be more to come???

Cycle Logic get's some press

Now that the Cycle Logic team kits are in and the Orange and Gray will start to show itself on the streets and in the races, word is spreading and we are no longer a "well kept secret". The 5count blog, which has a small but dedicated following in the Gainesville area, has just done a brief write-up on Cycle Logic.

In addition to the 5count blog, we have been approached by a "health-oriented" publication that has distribution all over the state to write an article on the formation of the Cycle Logic team. This could be a great opportunity for the team, it's riders and especially our generous sponsors. If the story does happen, some of the team photos taken at this weekends race in Gainesville may make their way to the pages of the above mentioned publication...so look pretty and show the orange and grey of the Cycle Logic proudly!
Stay tuned for more information as it becomes available

CYCLE-LOGIC'S FIRST WIN!!

Unfortunately, I wasn’t there this past weekend, but I have heard from the few that were that Cycle Logic is currently celebrating our first WIN!!…and just one day after receiving our team kits, mind you.

Congratulations go out to Cat 4 rider Roger Montes for his first place finish, and from what I heard Anthony Musalo gets the assist.

Great job guys!!!

Click here to see some picures from the race

Ron Palsgrove was also present, representing the Cat 5’s this past Saturday. Unfortunately he was pushed off the road in the last lap, and had some trouble reintegrating back into the pack. Ron was happy with his performance throughout the race, though and was pleased that he could respond to the attacks, and positioned himself well.

Don’t worry Ron, I’m sure your spot on the podium will come in a short time.

Now on to new stuff and the next race weekend:

• This upcoming weekend is the UF Race Weekend, consisting of time trials on Saturday (individuals in the am, and Teams in the afternoon), and downtown criterium on Sunday.
• Individual time trials start with the collegiate racers at 9:00 am Saturday morning, and the teams start after 2:00 pm
(times/ locations may change, so please check the flyer)
THE TIME TRIALS ARE NOT BEING HELD ON RACE TRACK ROAD. PLEASE CHECK THE FLYER FOR REVISED LOCATION.

• Sunday's criterium is fairly short, with a dip in the middle of the course on both sides, so there is a little bit of a climb twice on each lap. The streets are in pretty good condition, and there is one small section of cobbles.

Download event flyer here

Group Photos:
I have heard from about 95% of the team and I believe that everyone will be in Gainesville during the day on Saturday. Since the TTTs start around 2:00, and there is no certain times when our individuals will be racing, it would be best if everyone could be there by at least 10:30 or 11:00 a.m. so we can all group up and get some team photos together. If anyone has any ideas on a special location for a team photo, please make suggestions.

Of course, we would love for everyone to be on hand to support our individual time trialists (John Duggan, Steve Agronick?) I'm sure we all look forward to seeing the orange and grey battling it out this weekend.

See you at the races.

Take Stock in Children Ride

Take Stock in Children Cycling For Success Century Ride through Marion and Alachua Counties:
This ride is a Cycle-Logic sponsored ride, meaning that all Cycle Logic Members participating will be reimbursed their entry fee of $40. If I can get a firm number and names of those that will definitely be attending, I can register us all at one time.

The ride begins in Ocala the morning of March 10. It is a police escorted ride, usually with 50 to 100 riders participating. Of course, the police escort will be determined by the number of groups once the ride is under way and the size of those groups.

Take Stock in Children:
Founded in 1995 in response to the need for a scholarship program that provided more than just financial assistance to recipients, Take Stock in Children is an award-winning program that provides scholarships, mentors, and hope for a better future to Florida's most deserving children. A public-private partnership, this school-based mentoring organization has positively affected the lives of more than 11,000 children. Scholarships are purchased through the Florida Prepaid College Foundation, which provides matching funds to double the impact of scholarship donations to Take Stock in Children. Take Stock in Children is the only statewide scholarship program in Florida to provide trained, dedicated mentors representing every segment of society who mentor their students weekly from middle school through high school graduation.

Take Stock in Children locally has had 170 students graduate from the program. 90% of these students have gone on to further their education at community colleges and universities. Take Stock in Children is providing a solution to overcoming child poverty, academic failure and youth crime.

Cycle For Success:
Take Stock in Children, Florida's premiere mentoring and scholarship program is looking for cyclists to participate in its fourth annual Scholarship Bike Ride March 10th 2007. Cycling for Success, hosted by the Public Education Foundation of Marion County, Inc. and Santos Trailhead Bike Shop, will begin and end in Ocala. The ride will offer cyclists the option of riding a 25 mile, 50 mile or 100 mile route that will loop through beautiful and scenic back roads of Marion and Alachua Counties.

The registration fee is $40. Each rider is also asked to help raise money to purchase college scholarships for underserved children living in our community. One hundred percent of the funds raised by each cyclist will help purchase scholarships for Take Stock in Children students living in our community.

Local businesses have the opportunity to organize their employees to participate in this event. Ride as a team and promote your organization or ride as individuals. Riders of all ability levels are welcome. Along the route there will be rest areas, SAG wagons and bike guides to support cyclists and keep them rolling! Breakfast and a celebration lunch will be provided.

Find out more about the Take Stock in Children Ride here
